WHIPLASH

So a friend of mine that I was telling the story to about the music video thought it sounded a lot like the movie whiplash (which has been a film that we have discussed in our class) and so I decided to do a little more research about this film and see if I could maybe incorporate some of the elements that it uses and make references in the music video or just allude to it in anyway.

Most of the time new artists find something that has a big fandom and connect to it in any way, they can whether it’s through music videos or photoshoots in order to bring a different audience in. For example, Olivia Rodrigo had been unknown Taylor Swift fan for a while, so Taylor Swift fandom connected with her because of that. Another thing she did was make references to the film Jennifer’s body in her good 4 you music video Which again brought in fans of the film and into her music.

whiplash break up scene

So in the scene Andrew tells his girlfriend that he’s breaking up with her because he wants to spend all of his time drumming And he tells her that these are the problems that are going to happen in their relationship because of his love for drumming, and how he will only be able to think about drumming because of how great he wants to be. This story is the story I want to give Jack and to show the audiences his commitment to music in this way.

Whiplash (2014) also famously uses whip pans and is known for this, and I think incorporating a little more of that into the music video in specific shots would leave some Easter eggs for audience is to discover and follow along with the story therefore creating interest in the music video and artist.
